European Poultry Conference 2006, Verona (Italy)
The 12th edition of the European Poultry Conference (EPC) of the World's Poultry Science Association (WPSA) was held in Verona (Italy) from 11th till 14th of September 2006. The Conference was characterised by a worldwide participation of delegates: more than 1000 researchers and poultry technicians, coming from sixty-five countries of the five continents, attended the Conference. Seven hundred twenty one scientific studies were presented in plenary, parallel and poster sessions, as well as in workshops.
The plenary sessions included an outlook on the world trade of poultry products and the impact of developing Countries on the global egg and poultry meat productions (H.-W. Windhorst, Germany) and an analysis of the features conferring the poultry meat the second position among the most consumed meat in the world (E. Valceschini, France).
Moreover the increasing interest in breeding for genetic resistance to diseases and its successful for production traits has been underlined by J. Kaufman (United Kingdom), whereas the current and future strategies applied by meat-type selection industry on breeders to increase reproductive efficiency and to obtain high standards of bird health, welfare and product safety in addition to product performance desired by the end consumer have been examined by J. McAdam (Scotland). A prevision for future nutrient requirements for broilers and layers and the impact of niche product on formulations has been given by S. Leeson (Canada). I. Capua, from Italy, presented a very interesting review on avian influenza infection in the world pointing out the need of a close collaboration among public health officials involved in the veterinary, agricultural and medical aspects of the disease as well as the creation of an international multidisciplinary coordination leading to the exchange of scientific data, information and experiences and the increasing of dialogues among the international scientific communities. Besides, 59 communications presented by invited speakers and a total of 129 short oral presentations were discussed during the Conference, organised each day in parallel sessions on different topics such as genetics, reproduction and incubation, nutrition, physiology, welfare, meat and egg quality, poultry product safety, economics, education and technology transfer. Additionally, due to the great number of the accepted scientific contributes, 527 posters were shown throughout the Conference. The Conference gave high concern to the consumer's health highlighting the importance in food safety and traceability of products: thus, for example, it has been discussed the advances concerning the salmonella control in poultry farming, the microbial challenges of the egg, the antimicrobial treatments of poultry carcasses, as well as the effects of packaging systems on poultry products quality. Besides, it has been examined the functional properties of egg yolk lipoproteins which are essential to understand and to control the production of food made with emulsified yolk as well as it has been underlined the importance of the numerous compounds with biological activities contained in the eggs and the physiological benefits that novel egg products and fractions may have on human health. Animal welfare and monitoring of animal diseases were highly discussed; for example, criteria for welfare assessment and the implication of genetic factors in the determinism of welfare-relate traits have been examined as well as a perspective on the control of zoonotic agents in the poultry production chain, according to the EU directives and regulations, has been presented.
The next EPC will be held in Tours (France) on 23rd-27th August 2010.
